It is sad that the definition of a "true fan" has become warped

by society. At one time a "true fan" was just someone loyal (even extremely loyal) to a team with no defined attendance requirement. Now some have placed attendance requirements with being a "true fan" especially at the collegiate level. Some believe a "true fan" is someone who attends all home games. While others believe a "true fan" attends all home and away games.

What I find ironic about that position is most people only associate the "true fan" label with 1 or 2 sports at the collegiate level. Instead of all the sports sponsored by said college/university. If someone is supposed to be a "true fan" of VT, then I would think they are a fan of all sports sponsored by VT. Not just a fan of football and/or men's basketball. If there is an attendance requirement for football and men's basketball, then why not attendance requirement for the other sports? Then again, I disagree that a "true fan" of a team/school should be expected to always put that team/school ahead of familial responsibilities/activities, work-related responsibilities/activities, health, financial situation, and even time regardless whether the fan lives close to or far away from said team/school.
