It must be an oft-overlooked technicality. Other schools were punished for
academic violations (e.g., grade fixing, improper assistance). I imagine if UNC-Charlotte did the exact same things they'd get the death penalty. The NCAA had million$ of reasons to look for a loophole. The "it's ok if students also do it" defense makes no sense. Wouldn't expanding violations beyond athletics make things worse not better?
