FWIW colleges and universities over in Europe, Australia, and NZ

still participate in collegiate sports. However, they are viewed as more club sports within those societies. I don't believe they even broadcast intercollegiate competition on the telly. While I am not opposed to seeing collegiate athletics shift to more that model, I do believe there is an opportunity for colleges and universities to still put their "American cultural" stamp on that model.

Basically "big time" collegiate athletics spin off into an independent professional sports club organization to compete in various professional leagues. While colleges/universities allow collegiate athletics to return to a more club status. At the very least the athletic departments return to operating more on par with how a DIII or NAIA school operates (i.e. a very limited athletic budget). If a school wishes to become affiliated with one of these new professional clubs, then the school can be either the primary or secondary sponsor(s) for said club.
