I'm not sure they can afford NOT to pay it


While I actually think firing McNeil was probably the right call (they should have been better overall in 2013 and 2014 and they went 5-7 in 2015).

But under Montgomery, the bottom has fallen out. I can somewhat forgive last year's 3-9 debacle (though they got progressively worse as the year went on outside of an outlier against.... UCONN of all teams). But they're 1-6 this year, and have given up 56 or more in four of those losses. They got absolutely hammered by JMU (who is very good for their level, but nobody in FBS has any business being outclassed by JMU). This Saturday is probably their last semi-realistic chance of a win over another quick trainwreck of a program in BYU.

They have to view the firing of Montgomery as an investment. Letting that sideshow continue would be devastating to the long term future of the program.
