Hadn't really thought about those type choices.

If you are good enough to go play in Europe at 17, then you would most likely get a lot of college paid for by scholarship...however, even with that type of skill, the realistic odds of making it as a pro in Europe aren't very good.

So, do you roll the dice and go to Europe and likely lose amateur status, with very small odds of making the pro level required to make a living, or do you have someone pay for lots of your college and still have option of playing in MLS (and now have college degree as back up), even though you are well aware of how it ranks in world soccer.

Lot of us old guys would say take the chance while you are young, but that is a tough call for a 17 year old and family given the odds and today's college costs.
