Actually, Virginia was one of the less ardent members of the Confederacy.


The decision to secede was very narrow vote. Robert E. Lee himself didn't want secession. He was against it. However, like many, many folks at the time, including those up north, considered themselves citizens of their respective states 1st, and the United States 2nd. That why he turned down command of the Union armies.

On the other hand, the Virginian General George Thomas, of the same county where I grew up, Southampton, and did believe he was a citizen of the US 1st, and a citizen of Virginia 2nd.
