Perception is everything. What you said is true but the ACC and Big 10...


always talk about their academic standings as conferences. There's a "bragging right" that goes with membership. Even Louisville uses it and they aren't in the same league (academically) with the likes of Duke, Notre Dame, UVA, and Wake. It's all about perception and it unfortunately goes a long way, like it or not. Clemson loves mentioning their ACC membership to their state rival who plays in the SEC.

All this talk about FSU and Clemson leaving for the Big 12 was just that... talk. Neither was ever leaving unless UNC and UVA left and that was never going to happen. Georgia Tech was never joining the Big 10. That would have been a disaster (alumni/fan-university relationship) for them being on an island in a Midwestern athletics conference even with a world class airport in town.

We aren't seeing any major conference realignment for at least another 9 years and I wouldn't be surprised if Maryland tries to get back into the ACC within the next 20 years because a majority of their alumni and fans aren't excited about the Big 10. Big 10 fans wouldn't miss Maryland or Rutgers if they left today. With the constant changes in media, the Big 10 model may be obsolete in another 5 years.
