The original Big East was built for the 80's, not the 90's and beyond


The Big East was formed in the late 70's. Providence, Seton Hall, ST JOhns and Georgetown had no football teams. UConn was headed for 1AA. Villanova dropped football after Howie Long graduated.

In the late 70's, BC and Syracuse football programs were deciding whether to go D1AA or D1A. Traditional rivals like Holy Cross and Colgate were headed for D1AA, while others like Penn State, PITT and WVU are solid for D1A. Major investments are needed in staff and facilities to compete in D1A. If SYR and BC go D1AA, then the Big East doesn't have the schizophrenia that characterized its existence.

Syracuse had to decide to spend the money to build the Carrier Dome, which opened in 1980. Doug Flutie pulls miracles, and BC supporters upgrade facilities and coaching. Without this, the BIg East doesn't consider PennState, add Pitt and Miami, and then form the BEFC.
