It used to be when you went into a bar on a Thursday night the college game would be on because it was the only game. Now you go into a bar and the NFL is on pretty much all the TV's and the audio play by play is on and one TV in a corner has the college game on. Over time this kills the enthusiasm for the college game and makes a statement that all that matters is the NFL game. I disagree with that sentiment totally but the vast majority of the general public favors the NFL over the NCAA. But that same vast majority used to enjoy watching college on Thu night also.
