It's not ridiculous. It's the law.


Title VII governs workplace discrimination. It doesn't allow employers to treat people differently on the basis of sex (among other characteristics). This means that an employer cannot set the terms and conditions of employment differently for one gender than for the other. So the boss can't go out to dinner only with males, but never a female.

Policies like that make it difficult for ladies to move up.
