Insofar as mountain hiking, rigidity of the sole helps more than anything


But yeah, it mostly comes down to strength. When I was younger, I used to have a problem where the tendon on the outside of my ankle would occasionally slip out of its groove, not a sprain but it definitely incapacitates you until it's back in place and you ease back into using it. Problem went away once I got stronger.
