Sure

Lou Holtz went 100-30-2 at ND over 11 seasons.

From 1988-93, Holtz went 64-9-1. He had won a NC and had made ND into a top tier football program again.

Then, the Kim Dunbar scandal hit (she was a Townie bookkeeper with no ties to ND other than paying $25 to join the ND Quarterback Club). She embezzled money from her employer and bought jewelry for her ND football player boyfriend and a few others with part of the money.

The book "Under the Tarnished Dome" came out in the mid-Nineties, which talked about ND player steroid use and other things.

ND's administration thought Holtz and football was becoming "too big". They were embarrassed by Holtz and the football program. The program had become "too successful" and people were talking about it (partly for the wrong reasons), not the massive academic strides ND was making.

The Administration then forced Holtz out. He "retired" without giving a single concrete reason why. He just kept saying "It is the right thing to do."

(He ended up the head coach at South Carolina).

His defensive coordinator was a rat bastard named Bob Davie who was undermining Holtz with the AD and the school president every chance he got. He was angling to replace Holtz.

Davie got promoted to the job internally without a coaching search being launched. The rest is history.

ND doesn't want the "scandals" of an overly successful football program that might "tarnish" the academic reputation of the school among the administration's perceived peers.

(ND's administration put similar pressure on Frank Leahy in 1953 and Ara Parseghian in 1974. A recurring theme....).

CR and football conference non-membership is not the reason ND has struggled since then.

It is the lack of desire by ND's administration to go back to the "bad ole' days" when ND football was dominant.
