ESPN's role in the UT chaos
I've been thinking a lot about how things unfolded Sunday and how ESPN has covered the story. For the most part, I think their coverage has focused on the fact that Schiano is a good guy and Tennessee fans should shut up and take their medicine and like Currie's choice.
On every ESPN show on Monday, they all touted the party line...Tennessee fans are nuts and they have ruined Shiano's reputation and their school
Yet, 1/2 of ESPN's commercials are all about glorifying extreme fandom. That's the whole reason Game Day exists. So it seems hypocritical that they are chastising fans for being so extreme since this what they encourage.
I am in no way making excuses for how the fans reacted on Sunday. Obviously, it was bad, real bad. But (and I don't have twitter, so this may be common) I didn't like how Herbstreit was calling out people on Twitter. It seems almost as bad that ESPN is riding so hard on these fans for not liking a coach. For better or worse, you can't ridicule a fanbase into liking someone.
