I don't think it can happen because...

...you would be asking fans of teams like UCF, USF, Cincy, UConn etc. to give up on their power five aspirations. Sorry, but having been in their position as a Tech fan, I feel their pain. It basically creates another division and excludes them from the big boy table. I understand why the pundits love it: I would too. But I just can't see it happening. While I'm not a particular fan of expanding the playoff further, I think the solution is to go to 6 and give a spot to each P5 winner and one to the best G5 team. And BTW, if you can't win your conference, you aren't in, regardless if some panel of judges somewhere thinks you are better than a conference winner: save the panels for figure skating. I know, I know: that leaves no place for Notre Dame. Well, OK then! They can either join the ACC and win the conference title or fight to get that G5 spot! And having said that, I'll admit that my plan would never be adopted either. It's too fair. The G5 would probably love it, but the SEC and Big10 like the system to be unfairly biased in their favor (they want access to more than one spot), and Notre Dame would scream from the mountaintops. For all of these reasons, I see an 8 team playoff as inevitable since it appears to be the only way to give a G5 team a legitimate shot. And this rare post is from a guy who actually preferred the BCS.

But we don't have to get to four. One can be left out. -- crabcake77 12/02/2017 5:07PM
  Agreed. This isn't basketball -- VT ChemE 1986 12/01/2017 1:50PM
I maintain basketball isn't anchored in reality either. -- Atlee Hokie 12/02/2017 2:39PM
