We still need conference champs, right?


The games predate the playoffs. The purpose is to define a champion where round-robin is not available (unless you are Big 12 and overreact to one year in which you got left out). If you are only looking through the lens of the playoff then that is a different story. Penn State didn't make the playoff last year but they were the B1G champs. Separate things.

based on the 4 years, a conference champion has a 70% chance of making it. The system inherently leaves out a conference champ (which is a great thing, imo). All conference champs that made the playoffs were rated in the top 4 of the collective computer and human polls. The "conference champion" label did not add any extra weight. Meanwhile, 100% of non-champions rated in top 4 of collective human/computer polls have made it. Source:@BCSKnowsHow.

The conference champion label will matter at some point when there is not a hair to split between two teams but it would seem to be rare that it happens based on what we have seen thus far.
