Do they really have something to play for if they know that a limited

number of teams has a realistic shot of winning the conference championship? Plus, from a branding perspective the conference wants to have a limited number of flagbearers because it makes it easier for fans of other conferences to identify its brand of football. The ACC wants Clemson, FSU, Miami, VT, and maybe L'ville to be conference champion in football every year. It doesn't want BC, Duke, Wake, (maybe) Pitt, or (maybe) Syracuse to be conference champion because those teams don't really help the brand in football.

For the DI-FCS and DII conferences, the only reason they designate someone their champion is because they need 1 team to fulfill the automatic bid to their NCAA Playoffs. It is usually the team with the best conference record. However, if multiple teams have the same conference record, then they are all designated co-champions and a tiebreak system is used to determine which co-champion will receive the automatic bid to the NCAA Playoff.
