My gripe was tinkering with the rules too much & the XP was just an example

Kickers were making a high percentage of PATs. However, I also noticed that a lot of defensive (and even offensive players) were taking the play off. You can't block a kick if you don't try. At least in the college game you see players make an effort to block the kick. It would have made more sense for the NFL to implement the 2-point rule for defensive scores on PATs before moving it back. Heck even playing more backups, who may be motivated to try to make a play on special teams to get recognized by the coaches, may have put the excitement back into special teams.

A reason to move the PAT back was to try to encourage more NFL teams to go for 2-points. Over time if enough NFL teams are going for 2-points every time, then the kicking of the PAT could be phased out. Instead, the NFL could do what is done in Pee Wee and Midget football; running play for a score = 1 point and a passing play for a score = 2 points.
