All depends on your particular butt geometry. I have WTB Laser V on my MTB

and just ordered another Selle Italia Max Flite Gel Flow for my road bike to replace the one that just wore out.

You want to make sure your weight is supported by your sit bones, not your soft tissue (which could mean you're compressing blood vessels and nerves in your private parts). I believe that saddles and shorts are worth the investment to get it right.

I don't think they offer the WTB Laser anymore, but I picked that because WTB has a good reputation, and this particular model was mid-range in terms of width and length; i.e. a good starting point. It works fine for me. The Max Flite Gel Flow is a racing saddle, but it's pretty wide for a racing saddle, and has a big love channel too. Several years ago, I tried a few saddles, including the Fizik Arione mentioned below, and Selle Italia Flite, neither of which I liked.

You may do some research, then look on ebay for a used version of something you want to try. Lots of saddles there in good shape because someone tried them, then didn't like it. Some bike shops also have different versions of a "butt meter" where you sit on a foam pad, then they measure the indentations your sit bones make to get an idea of your sit bone width. Selle Italia also had test saddles you could borrow to take for a ride.
