Agree. I was still the "cool aunt," even though I gave books,...

...puzzle booklets, and other inexpensive things to my nieces back in the 70s. In the 80s, even though our son loved his legos, G.I. Joe figures, games, laser-type toy guns, and an age-appropriate magic set, he was also fascinated by any pop-up books I could find. He liked the Revolutionary War and Civil War uniforms editions of the "Dover Fashion Coloring Book Series," which had every uniform in realistic detail, ready to be colored in. Eight-year-old have big imaginations and enjoy all sorts of stories. Our son loved to be read to long after he could read by himself. But children this age are also becoming interested in "real things"—nonfiction books about animals, sports figures, simple science experiments, people in history, people from other countries, dinosaurs. And finally, 8-year-olds love to tell jokes and generally like the age-appropriate joke books available—although their parents might not thank you later!

Joke books
Puzzles and mazes
The Boxcar Children Mysteries (boxed set)
The Animal Book: A Collection of the Fastest, Fiercest, Toughest, Cleverest, Shyest―and Most Surprising―Animals on Earth
The Everything Kids' Science Experiments Book: Boil Ice, Float Water, Measure Gravity-Challenge the World Around You!

And there's such a greater variety today than back then to choose from.
