USC really has no other choices due to geography...
unless they join the Big 12. IMHO, that wouldn't be a good move.
As for being a football independent, it might work out as well as it is for Notre Dame. A Major Independents grouping of USC, BYU, Notre Dame, Army, and Navy along with schools like San Diego State, Boise State, SMU, Air Force, and a few others make it large enough to schedule 5 or 6 major independents annually along with 6 P-5 opponents from outside that independent grouping. All those Independent football programs could schedule enough P-5 teams to have a chance at the playoffs. With all that said, USC has a good thing going in the Pac-12. They'd be idiots to leave.
