Three reasons
Ok, so I'm backwards. *lol* refer to this for the other argument :)
Comcast, just to use a single example
1) Controls the transmission of content (as an ISP)
fine, whatever
2) Provides content (as NBC Universal)
oops. Now they have an incentive to prioritize content for direct financial gain
3) Flexes it's considerable financial muscle to create barriers to entry for potential competition
and that's a monopoly in a lot of markets.
The problem with "let the market sort it out" is all the rent seeking that happens in (3). The fact that this is an issue before the FCC at all is an example of rent seeking. Comcast isn't spending money hand over fist in pursuit of highly unpopular regulations that are not designed to make them even more money. [Post edited by Beerman at 12/14/2017 12:34PM]
