From the VTCC history write-up on the Corps web pages:
"In 1896, VAMC, by law changed its name to the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute. Right away usage took on its new designation abbreviated as VPI or Virginia Tech."
The official name of the Corps is the VIRGINIA TECH Corps of Cadets and has been since about the same time referenced above.
The use of "VPI" was officially discouraged after the university name was changed to VPI&SU in the early 1970s (just before my freshman year). [Post edited by Hokie in CT at 12/14/2017 5:58PM]
