The narrative on pits is twofold:

They have a much stronger bite strength than your average dog. Closer to a gator I'd imagine

Also, they are attractive targets for those who would breed them to be mean due to point 1. I agree in and of itself, a breed isn't necessarily dangerous on it's own. Would you rather have an old model T coming at you at 15 mph or a brand new F350 diesel at top speed.
