I liked it well enough, but it did nothing to advance the overall plot line
SPOILERS
All of the characters are pretty much in the exact same place they were at the end of the last movie. Some things that stood out to me:
1. I really hated the part where Luke dies. It was obvious they were going to do a callback to the first SW movie and the Obi Wan/Vader fight. And when it turns out the Luke isn't really there I thought that was clever and then they go an ruin it by killing him anyway. Why even bother? Should have just killed him during the fight and saved a lot of time.
2. The problem with Reys' character is similar to the problem Marvel has with all of their movie villains. No development and little motivation, they're just evil for the sake of being evil. And Rey has the reverse problem. When Luke is tempted to the dark side in Empire/ROTJ he resists because he's haunted by the thought of turning into his father. In this movie, Rey resists turning to the dark side because...well she's just good. And the reveal about the insignificance of her parents just makes the problem worse. Now she's just a generic foil that popped up automatically because Kylo Ren joined the dark side.
Wow, that rant was way too long.
