Part of the big story here is that Skipper had no successor in the wings


When ESPN transitioned from Bodenheimer to Skipper, Skipper was being groomed for the top and was the succession plan.

This time around, no plan in place and nobody waiting to take over the controls. The fact that Bodenheimer has been asked to come back and manage the transition tells you that this was quite a surprise.
