No, SEC had teams playing for titles in the 90's too....and

ESPN isn't the reason for it. TN was playing for titles in the later 90's. Florida too. Alabama is going through a Bear Bryant run right now but that will be ending in a few years.

Most years there will be a team in the south playing for a title and some random years a team from the north will win it. 5 northern programs have won a national title since 1990 - Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio State, Washington and Colorado. Notre Dame and Penn State would be the only others that would win a national title from the north.

The rest in the south will be USCw, maybe some year UCLA, Texas, Oklahoma, SEC teams and ACC teams like Miami and Florida State.

College football is cyclical and always will be. The B1G has made major improvements with their coaching staffs over the last several years and it showed in the bowl games this year.

The Pac has never been a great football conference from top to bottom and never will be. They will have some years in the future when they have a team that can win a national title again, but as of right now there is nobody close besides some random team getting into the playoff some random year - like Washington last year.
