A possible answer to your question...


The Big XII was either not sold on a 12th member or it couldn't come up with a divisional alignment that majority of the 10 current schools could agree upon. If the Big XII added UCF as the 11th member and no 12th member, then the Big XII would have to play 10 conference games in order to hold a CCG. Not exactly the way to go in the current environment. If the Big XII had 2 schools in mind (i.e. UCF and ECU), then it is possible the current 10 members didn't have a majority on whether the conference would be divided up North-South, East-West, using the zipper model with 1-2 protected cross-division games, or some other methodology for establishing the divisions. If a conference can't figure out a way to arrange the 12, 14, or 16 members into 2 divisions, then it doesn't make sense to expand the conference membership.
