A possible reason Oklahoma didn't want Houston is because of the division

alignment. OU and Okie State may have wanted to be in a division with the 4 TX schools. If Houston was added, then Houston would have been in a division with the 4 other TX schools which meant that OU and Okie State may not be in the same division. Football there are workarounds, but the issue may have been in basketball and the other sports (assuming the divisions were maintained for the other sports). FWIW the SEC (12 members) maintained the divisions in basketball which meant division opponents were played twice (10 games) and opposite division opponents once (6 games). OU and Okie State may not want to play each other only 1 time or 1 series per year.

Plus, having 5 TX schools could give rise to adding 1 other TX school. Then 1 division could be the 6 TX schools and the other division could be the remaining 6 schools. Or give rise to using the zipper model with each division having 3 TX schools and OU potentially having to decide whether Texas or Okie State is their protected cross-division partner.
