I'm a skeptic (in the dictionary sense of the word), and I could have written most of that same paragraph that you wrote (minus the last phrase) before I started college. After college, grad school, and following the literature from a bit of a distance for the past 15-20 years, I'm rather convinced that the increase in CO2 is the largest driver in the rapid increase in overall global temperatures.

But your comment, "certainly no way to tell..." is simply not correct. There are scientific ways to tell what is happening. See the link below. It is written at a reasonably accessible level.

There are multiple lines of empirical evidence that increasing carbon dioxide causes an enhanced greenhouse effect. Laboratory tests show carbon dioxide absorbs longwave radiation. Satellite measurements confirm less longwave radiation is escaping to space at carbon dioxide absorptive wavelengths. Surface measurements find more longwave radiation returning back to Earth at these same wavelengths. The result of this energy imbalance is the accumulation of heat over the last 40 years.
