Meltdown relatively easily patched, Spectre less so, but what can you do?

Like a ghost, Spectre is going to be haunting things for a long time, with software workarounds being patched in for specific exploits as they arise, but when every single architecture and instruction set currently out there is affected, it's not like there's some safe haven to shift into. Best thing you can do is avoid as many potential attack vectors as you can, while having a realistic plan for when something bad does happen (backups, changing credentials, freezing accounts, that kind of thing).
