Sure it helps, but it's not a cure all.
My friend cycles for 1000's of miles every year and was taken out by a deer one neighborhood over. He was wearing his helmet which probably saved his life, but he got a concussion and had seizures as a result of the impact of his head to the pavement. So, yes the padding provided a better outcome, but there is no truly safe way to play the game of football. It's the nature of the game and how far these athletes have taken their bodies. That said, everyone knows about it, and it's all volunteer and greed based industry, so I don't have a problem with it.
