young kid. Only to the extent that he is willing to push himself, I would recommend strength and cardio days be alternated. I would definitely recommend that the strength days be heavily linked to his weight with push ups, pull ups, sit ups to start.

After that core cardio and strength is established, I would bring weights into the picture along with diet if he is interested. The biggest issue I have always had when attempting to build mass is simply eating enough to build the mass. I’ve generally not been willing to sacrifice my cardio just to build mass and that drastically limits what I can accomplish.

I can’t emphasize enough how important diet is in terms of fitness goals. Workouts and diet need to both be tailored to the goal or the results will be sub-par.

At 12, the best thing he can learn is how to control his body with all sorts of diet and exercise.
