Some HOAs go beyond that though


About 10 years ago I was renting a basement apartment in a house in NOVA. In this particular neighborhood each street had its own HOA. The HOA for the street I lived on wanted complete control of both inside and outside house. If you wanted to do any repairs in your home (even something like touching up the paint), you had to use the HOA's "approved" repair company. You weren't even allowed to mow your own yard (not like there was much since the house was huge and the lot was tiny) or work the flower gardens because HOA hired a lawn company to handle all of that. Heck you couldn't even have a car parked in the driveway (had to be parked in the garage) or else the county foot patrol (aka meter maid) would write you a ticket.
