FWIW Matt Cassel was a backup QB at USC


and declared early for the NFL as a r-JR. I think he took no more than 40 snaps his entire time at USC and was somehow drafted in the 7th Round by the Patriots. Somehow he managed to turn that into a 12 years+ NFL career (still in the NFL). Given how frequently some positions rotate these days, being a backup may not be that much different than being a co-starter.
