I love all the folks expecting demands out of ESPN.

Its a business relationship, if you as a conference (as directed by the schools ) to maximize TV rights with ESPN, ESPN for their investment expect maximum flexibility to mazimize their investment with offerings over the TV spectrum. Every restriction the conference demands, ticks off in negotiation a level of funding that ESPN will provide to the conference. (This is business not just ESPN but FOX does the same).
