The NFL rules state that a player must be 3 years removed from HS

to be eligible for the NFL Draft. I think the CFL has the same rule. However, it doesn't say that a player has to remain in school for that long or where a player can play for those 3 years. In theory a player could decide to play in a semi-pro league, indoor league, another pro league (i.e. one in Mexico), or take a year "off" (i.e. Mike Williams and Maurice Clarett) before declaring for the NFL Draft.
