Aerodynamics and ergonomics...


You still need something projecting from the front of the passenger compartment to house the passenger's legs, as they need to be sitting facing forward to control the vehicle. And going forward (see what I did there?) from that assumption, the front of the car needs to be aerodynamic in order to use less energy at speed. Designing an aerodynamically efficient car is probably very expensive, so they used a lot of prior knowledge based on existing automobile designs to refine the aerodynamics, thus the car-like shape.

Bottom line, a human is still needed to control it, so that's why you have a car-shaped....car.
