The G5 needs a path to the playoff, not their own tournament.

I understand that 4 teams is a bit restrictive, but 8 isn't. And a team like UCF this year should be able to get in under an 8 team playoff. Now for these G5 teams, there needs to be some guidelines (for example, they have to schedule one, or I think two, P5 teams OOC). And only an unbeaten can get an automatic slot. And the committee only has to take one. If there are multiple unbeaten teams, the committee only needs to take one.

Either way, a path to the playoff is so much better for growth and competitiveness. There is also an underdog factor, like the NCAABBT that is nice. Can you imagine in UCF beat Auburn in an actual playoff game?

I think this proposal is far more palatable and better than trying to force 5 conferences into 4 and worrying about Notre Dame and the shame of relegating up and coming programs to a permanent underclass.
