Saved like a sumbitch

But seriously, here are a few things that I think were key:

My parents footed the entire bill for my VT education. Which means I started my working life debt-free. I am doing the same for my kids, it's a great gift if you can pull it off.

I live in a lower cost of living metropolitan area (not DC, PHL, NY, etc). The dollars I earn go farther.

My wife and I stretched a little to buy our first home, but we bought a house that we never had to move from. Been in the house almost 25 years. Our housing cost was in 1993 dollars, but our salary/income continued to grow. Meaning growing disposable income over time. And when needed we stretched the house rather than moving. House was paid off many years ago.

We have always lived below our means. We bought things we needed, not things we wanted.

Other than the mortgage, lived debt-free. Everything else was bought with cash -- or else we didn't buy it.

I'm 51 now and can retire any time I want to. Will likely retire in about 2 years when my company is sold.
