I think Tua played a bit this season in mop up duty, but not


in important situations. I do remember that everyone was really high on him coming into the season and thought he may take Hurts' place. I thought they were crazy.

As to why Saban did it there? I think he knew they weren't going to win with Hurts at QB. He likely thought a change was their only chance, and it was very possible it wouldn't work. He didn't care because they couldn't win anyway. I'm not sure how ballsy it was as much as it showed that he'll do anything to win, even if it won't work.
