Hard to disagree with much of that, but here's a potential response

Dear Bill,

We received your email regarding Virginia Tech tailgating policies and practices. By and large, the concepts noted in your email are well-taken and probably already observed by the vast majority of Hokie football fans. It's unfortunate that a few folks can spoil the experience for the bulk of otherwise considerate fans.

On the other hand, there are some additional things Virginia Tech and the Hokie Club might do to alleviate the concerns of Tech donors and fans and further improve the game day experience. Here are just a few problems that are longstanding, well-known and are ripe for a solution.

1. Increase the size of parking spaces in football parking lots. One of the reasons tailgating spills into traffic areas is because one can barely get in and out of one's car, much less set up a small table, a couple of chairs and a cooler within it. Increasing space size may decrease Tech's revenue, but it will improve the fan experience and likely decrease the number of undesirable game day incidents.

2. Increase the width of seating spaces in Lane Stadium; indeed, improve the bench seating generally by installing more pro-style seats or permanent, continuous seat backs as Wake Forest has done in its stadium - which as you know, is virtually identical to the original portion of Tech's facility. These improvements may decrease the stadium's seating capacity and thereby decrease Tech's revenue, but it will improve the fan experience and possibly decrease the number and degree of undesirable game day inconveniences.

3. Place law enforcement or other security in and about football parking lots who have authority to actually police and enforce Tech policies and regulate selfish, inconsiderate behavior. Policies are great, but leaving those policies to be enforced by fans is not a solution. Utilizing security who exercise good judgment and common sense in enforcing Tech policies will represent an increased cost to Tech, but will go a long way toward improving the game day experience.

4. Increase the number of points of entry for Lane Stadium. Lane Stadium seats over 60,000 fans but has less than a dozen points of entry, with each entry having no more than four ticket takers. Although space around the stadium is somewhat constricted, there simply must be some way to improve the bottlenecks that inevitably occur 20-40 minutes before kickoff.
