You can go to the county office for administration of estates

Set up an appointment to meet with them. They will give you a paper handout of things that need to be done to handle his estate. There is a fee to be the executor (personal rep) paid to the office based on the assets. They will certify you as executor with a notarized letter of personal rep for the estate. You'll need multiple copies to provide when you require information or to interact with creditors. You can also submit an application for a federal tax id number if you think a bank account is needed to handle the estate.

You can file for an extension of his income tax return after you get his tax statements and find out his withholding and so on.

I would do an initial inventory of assets and debts, and make a determination as to whether a lawyer is needed. If you communicate with creditors with a phone call and a followup letter and the personal rep form, they will freeze the account and file a claim with the court in the event there are funds to pay off the accounts. No interest will accrue once the account is frozen.

Sorry for the loss.

PS. The handout may include the forms you need to submit to the clerk's office for the accounting for the estate (initial, intermediate, and final) . If they find things are not prepared in their preferred format, they will let you know. They will work with you (so don't think things can only be done with a lawyer). I saw some little old ladies that were in the office to handle the paperwork for their dear departed.
