Pitt can't recruit in the ACC the way it did in the Big East

Pitt's success was built on a bunch of kids from New York and elsewhere in the northeast. For kids in that region, playing in a city like Pittsburgh makes sense, especially when Pitt could also sell what was then a pretty new basketball arena and related facilities. Pitt was really good in the Big East when the Big East was as good as and probably much better than the ACC is now.

Pitt doesn't get to play at St. John's, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Villanova and Georgetown anymore. It has to be much harder to convince a kid from Virginia or the Carolinas to go to Pittsburgh to play basketball. On top of that, the administration was foolish to let Jamie Dixon go, even if Pitt had slipped a little, and they doubled down on their mistake by hiring Kevin Stallings, who has the reputation as being a great tactician but not great at interacting with his players.

Pitt can be a solid basketball program but it will take a unique set of circumstances for Pitt to have as much success in the ACC as it had most recently in the Big East.
