I'm a career corp comms guy at Fortune 300 company; here's other side

You're right - some edits you describe are ticky-tacky things. They might make the document better from a comms POV, but if you expect to have any credibility and relationship with others, a good comms person will let that stuff go.

Sometimes, though, the comms person has a responsibility to ensure that how things are said and presented is consistent. This poor comms person is reading documents from everywhere, and may be trying to support a consistent culture/approach. if that's so, he/she should talk with you about that and not just send you a marked up doc.

Also, a good comms person will take technical writing and simplify it. We have many engineers in my company, and I openly have said to some of them that my role is translator. Sometimes that's heavy duty technical jargon to plain English. Other times it's simply torturous sentences. And their most common objection is that it's too simplified and/or that the simplification made it incorrect. More than 90 percent of the time, it doesn't matter because the intended audience understood what needed to be understood even if it wasn't technically correct.

So yeah, you sound like you have an overzealous editor. At the same time, they may feel they are helping you.

You can still drink heavily and/or send them flaming poo.
