There was a lot of long-term resentment of the ACC being dominated by the big 4. Even their AD left for NC State.

1 game doesn't make for a comparison. If I had compare Tech recent play to anybody, it would probably be a Greenberg team with Blackshear as Collins at center earlier in his career when he was mobile, Clarke as Deron Washington at power forward, and then Robinson and Wilson as Dowdell and Gordon. They play like a scrappy underdog.
