They didn't really have an invite. They were simply in the mix


The article stated that Delany told NU initially that the B1G wasn't in a hurry, that NU was in the mix with several other schools. The B12's push for a commitment and GOR, in the face of UT and OU -- maybe others -- not making that commitment forced NU to reach out to Delany and see if the timeline could be moved up. They did. If they didn't, and the B12 fell apart, they would have been left in the B12 leftovers.

Article also states that at the time, NU wasn't really against UT, as the unequal revenue sharing championed by UT benefited NU, at least with respect to most of the other members. This was before the LHN so it wasn't anti-UT that forced the move as much as self-preservation in the face of B12 instability.
