My claim was never that it was an unimportant position. The importance of

the dominant running back has diminished as offenses have diversified. The offenses in the NFL have become more pass oriented.

I looked for the average salaries by position in the NFL and it may surprise you that all positions except kickers, tight ends, and safeties average more than running backs. What conclusion on positional importance could you make from that statistic?
