ACC Indoor Track

We are the defending champions on the men's side and have a good chance of repeating. Like last year, it should be a 4 team race with VT, UVa, FSU and Clemson being the only teams with a realistic shot of winning. I looked at last year's results , tossed out the seniors and recalculated the points. Not counting the relays, the scores would be: VT-97, UVa-90, FSU-64 and Clemson-59. If I add in the finish for last year's relays (no way to discount the seniors), the final scores would be VT-109, UVa-93, FSU-77 and Clemson-73. This is real close to last year's overall finish of VT-109, UVa-98, FSU-86 and Clemson-76.
Obviously there is no way of accounting for freshman and transfers but we do have the following working in our favor:
1) We are the only team among the top-4 that is returning all of our relay runners in the distance medley relay (one leg each of 400, 800, 1200 and 1600). We not only finished first in the ACC but finished second at the NCAA's. We should be able to defend in this event since we are very strong and deep in the 800 and 1600. There is no 1200 race but one of our 3 top milers will most likely run this distance in the relay.
2) We are the only team among the top-4 that is returning all of our relay runners in the 4 x 400. Last year, running 3 freshmen, we finished 7th for 2 points. Later in the Spring, we finished 3rd in the same event outdoors; good for 6 points. I look for us to score more than 2 points in this event.
3) We picked up a key transfer in the 60 Hurdles. He should get us 4 or more points.
4) We have one of the more improved distance runners in the conference, Peter Seufer, and he should be in contention in the 5K. This is the only running event where UVa has an edge so a top finish here could gain us points at their expense.

As usual, we should be very strong in the pole vault plus the 800, mile and 3K runs. We should pick up points in the 200, 400, 5K and 60 hurdles. I don't think we have anybody in the shot put or weight throw and we are weak in the long jump, triple jump and high jump. Any points in those events would be an unexpected bonus. A lot can happen but it will be disappointing not to win this. Go Hokies.
