Ironically, our OOC schedule wasn't THAT bad. 23-130 is the key number
I'm not saying our OOC was tough, but the issue is how RPI calculates SOS. It is a calculation and unfortunately this calculation has now breathed a life of its own that "VT played a horrible OOC schedule". This is a bit misleading.
Here's what's really happening: Many other teams with far better OOC SOS have played just as many games (or more) against VERY CRAPPY quadrant 3 or 4 teams but the teams they played were LESS CRAPPY than our matchups. For example, easily beating a crappy 10-18 team is MASSIVELY better than easily beating a crappy 3-23 team when it comes to the RPI. Furthermore, some teams have much better OOC SOS only because they mixed in 1 or 2 games against excellent teams - and although they lost - they have much better SOS as it bumps up their opponent's overall record.
We played a neutral game vs Washington, @Kentucky, @Mississipi, and Iowa. That's really not that bad. Had Kentucky, Mississippi, or Iowa played a more normal season it would have helped a bit.
The issue is 23-130, which is the combined W-L record of the following teams:
Detroit Mercy
Citadel
Houston Baptist
Morehead State
MD Eastern Shore
Presbetarian
We could have beaten all these teams just as easily had they gone 50-80 which would have given us a decent OOC SOS. If it comes to quadrants, it doesn't matter and hopefully that is what the committee focuses on instead of a more subjective excuse of "VT's OOC SOS was near the bottom".
