I wouldn't accept an a-hole on my team at work even if he was a "winner".
Jack Welch, former CEO of GE and management guru, says that the one performer type you want to eliminate is the high performer who violates your culture. People in the middle, you provide coaching and support to get better, people at the bottom, you put on a performance improvement plan, but high performers who violate the culture (the most typical example being the sales rep who brings in tons of money but treats everyone like crap)? Fire them immediately, no probationary period, no performance intervention - remove them from the organization before they run everyone else off.
